LAST ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPEDITION OF GANY ISKAKOV (13.01.1970–23.06.2019)

Abstract

Who was Gany for me? He was my faithful and reliable companion devoted to archeology, and a grateful learner. He was born in 1970, in the village of Karatobe of Zhana-Korgan district in Kyzyl-Orda area. After graduating from high school he served in the Soviet Army, and in 1990–1996 studied at the Faculty of History of KazSU. I taught him archaeology at University and administered an exam. After graduating from the University he was engaged in medieval archaeology, and since 1993, when the work of the Kazakhstan-Russian archaeological expedition in Kazakhstan started, he began to cooperate closely with us and seriously engaged in problems of the Stone Age. In 1998–2001 he took an internship in the Paleolithic sector of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography in the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Novosibirsk), did postgraduate studies in Archaeology and in 2006 successfully defended his PhD thesis. After defence, basing on personal involvement in archaeological expeditions, Gany wrote and published about 70 scientific papers in various publications. In 2006–2007 and 2009–2011 Iskakov Gany T. worked as a Head of the Department of Archaeology, Ethnology and Religious Studies of IKTU named after Yesevi. In 2013–2016 he was an assistant professor of the Department of Archaeology, Ethnology and Museology of the Faculty of History, Archaeology and Ethnology of KazNU named after al-Farabi. After that he moved to the city of Turkistan, was a head of the department of the museum-reserve “Kazret-Sultan,” then a deputy director of scientific work. In the last year he worked as a senior researcher at the Research Center of Archaeology of IKTU named after Yesevi. And wherever he

worked, he rose to the occasion. He was a decent man.
